The
following search engine optimization and marketing services and programs should
be avoided at all costs. Do not take the word of those supplying these services
about the benefits of their use or acceptance by search engines, the resources
they exploit without any regard.
They spend a great deal of time propagating
all the myths about why their services or programs are needed. In most cases,
the myths do much more harm than good or are outright frauds.
Remote
Search Engine Submission Programs: The myth, they build traffic,
the fact is that they mostly submit to Free for All link pages. Most major search
engines are blocking ( not accepting submissions ) from them. We have tried a
few and have never received results as good as a hand
submission to just the major sites.
Page
generators based on keywords sometimes called "doorway or hallway pages":
the myth, these are an effective way to receive top
listings, the facts are these are truly a menace to the search engines and seldom
provide top positions that last for any great length of time.
Cloaking
and IP Delivery : the myth, search engines do not regard
this as spam, the facts are most search engines do regard this as spam and it
can result in de-listing or worse an outright blackballing of the domain! Use
with care and do a little checking if you need it for something other than search
engine optimization.
Remote search engine submission
programs :
Keep in mind, just a handful of the
search engines provide over 80% of all traffic from search engines. Of these,
three are directories and must be hand submitted by someone who knows how to optimize
and submit the listing for best results.
Many
search engines have paid submission programs and may be adding a booster to pages
submitted through their inclusion programs.
Inclusion programs guarantee indexing of a page on an agreed upon frequency.
Submission
Programs come in three basic flavors :
| Submission
of pages at predetermined intervals. This is a major myth the engines seldom "loose"
a page, it is still there, you just didn't know how to find it! In the past some
engines did give higher relevance to pages freshly indexed. The abuse of this
was significant, and to our knowledge this is no longer the case! |
| Online
services that submit to several search engines in a single click. Many look like
the submission was accepted, often the search engine implies the submission was
qued for indexing, this is often not the case at major search engines. |
| Standalone
or submission programs residing on your computer. In a lot of cases these programs
submissions are just going to result in a ton of spam email, listings that are
refreshed regularly (needing re-submission), provide little if any traffic and
are subject to blocking by the major search engines. |
Page
generators based on keywords sometimes called "doorway or hallway pages":
I
have had pages that have maintained top ten positions for years, this should be
your goal! Many search engines will not index pages they do not find themselves,
page generating programs are one of the main reasons for this indexing behavior
by search engines.
WebPosition is one program that claims to do an effective
job of this, in fact the generated pages are only as good as the reverse engineering
powering them ( I found it to be very prone to errors) or the search engine optimization
consultant using it.
In the hands of a search engine optimization professional
it can be an effective program, however, they are tweaking the pages in order
to improve the generated pages. Like FrontPage ( its equivalent in the page development
field ) it is only as good as the person sitting in front of it!
These
generated pages are probably not going to provide the first impressions of the
site that you really need to make sales. Users looking for good information find
these pages to be a waste of time and leave quickly.
Remember, getting
traffic to the site is only half the battle, once on the site the user wants to
easily find the info or product they searched for. First impressions play a big
part in a users decision to purchase.
WebPosition's
search engine position monitoring tools are also subject to blocking by some engines
which is contrary to what they lead you to believe by the error messages provided
in the program.
A search engines resources
are theirs to do with what they please. In a sense, WebPosition believes search
engines should bare the costs of processing the 100's of thousands of requests/day/engine
by WebPosition users.
Cloaking and IP Delivery:
Cloaking
and IP Delivery are a method of search engine optimization through technology.
The program detects if the request is from a search engine and delivers the optimized
page. If the program detects a user it provides a different page often minus the
meta tags and title so other search engine optimization consultants can't figure
out how the optimized page received a high position.
Most search engines,
Inktomi possibly being the only engine not to regard any page that differs from
what was submitted as spam. Some sites that are subject to laws and regulation
depending on the origin of the request may be allowed, however, this could also
be regarded as spam and it is probably best to contact a few search engines to
be sure they would allow it in your case. This method is also one of the least
cost effective manners
in which to optimize a site for search engines.
Generally,
costs are tied to clicks from the engine just like banner ads. These days a banner
on a search engine, topic specific directory or paid
placement may be a better use of your budget. This is
also a service which most search engine optimization consultants abhor and most
sites using it are probably first detected by professionals and reported to the
search engine.
Proper submission using a sound search engine optimization
strategy are the keys to the search engine visibility door, they open the door,
without them you are locked out.
